Radial and buttress spillway gates are structures designed to ensure that when the reservoir behind a hydroelectric power station (HPP) or dam reaches its maximum water load, the excess water is released in a controlled manner to the downstream riverbed, minimizing the risk of flooding around the station and its surroundings. As SETA ÇELİK, we provide strong solutions as a reliable partner by preparing all detailed designs for spillway radial and buttress gates and their guides and stays, supplying the necessary materials, carrying out manufacturing processes, transport, installation, and the installation and adjustment of embedded elements, along with the necessary accessories, including lifting beams, for commissioning the gates.
Use of Radial and Buttress Spillway Gates
Radial and buttress spillway gates are designed to work in synchronized harmony with each other. The buttress gates will be used to close the radial gate openings during maintenance or repair of the radial gates. All buttress segments will be interchangeable, thus they will be identical in every aspect. The buttress gates will be lowered and raised under balanced pressure using a mobile crane. The balanced pressure condition will be achieved by opening the gate just slightly. In multi-part gates, this will be achieved by slightly opening the top part.
Gate parts will be centered over each other using pins. The lifting beam will be equipped with dual hooks for balanced lifting and lowering. Buttress gates will be kept suspended above the normal reservoir water level in the radial gate slots as much as possible.
As SETA ÇELİK, after the field installation of the spillway gates, operator training is provided, emphasizing the use of gates, with practical training on the operating conditions of radial and buttress spillway gates.
Design of Radial and Buttress Spillway Gates
The gates will be designed according to DIN 19705 "Hydraulic Steel Structures; Design, Construction, and Installation Proposals" standard (or an equivalent standard). The project calculations for the gates will be in compliance with DIN 19704 "Hydraulic Steel Structures" standard. The project load for the gates will include the weight of the gate itself, hydrostatic load, sediment load, wave force, buoyancy, operational effects, wind load, hydrodynamic load, and earthquake impact. Stress analysis will be performed based on critical load conditions for each structural component and connection, in accordance with the significant stress values specified in DIN 19704 standard.
SETA ÇELİK provides complete turnkey solutions from design to installation for radial and buttress spillway gates, ensuring optimal solutions in terms of time, quality, and cost for our valued customers.
Manufacturing and Control Phases of Radial and Buttress Spillway Gates
After the manufacturing of the radial and buttress spillway gates is completed, they will undergo full pre-assembly in a horizontal position in our workshop. As with every project, SETA ÇELİK prepares complete workshop detail and manufacturing drawings, material lists, and test procedures for the manufacturing of radial and buttress gates. These documents show all necessary dimensions and assembly details.
The compatibility of embedded elements will be checked. The gasket compression surfaces on the gate segments will be inspected. Ultrasonic and/or magnetic particle testing will be applied to at least 30% of the total length of the welds in the workshop, or radiographic testing will be performed as per customer instructions and specifications.
For field welding of radial and buttress spillway gates, radiographic or ultrasonic tests are applied in accordance with the relevant provisions of the ASME Code.
